Dom and Bonnie Colucci's 1968 Chevelle COPO Tribute

Dom & Bonnie Colucci's 1968 Chevelle 300 COPO tribute

Colucci Chevelle engineDom and Bonnie Colucci's 1968 Chevelle is a real sleeper. Under that base Chevelle 300 exterior and poverty caps, there's a ZZ502 big-block Chevy V8, an M21 4-speed and 12-bolt rear end with 3:55 gears.

The Colucci's Chevelle started life in California as a Tripoli Turquoise Chevelle 300 with a black vinyl interior.

Colucci Chevelle interiorFrom such humble origins, the Chevelle was was turned into a COPO tribute car. COPO — Central Office Production Orders — was a loophole savvy dealers and their customers used to get Chevrolet's most powerful big-block V8 in a lightweight stripper Chevelle. Don Yenko was the first to exploit the COPO loophole, but other dealerships began ordering COPO Chevelles and Camaros as well.

Only 323 COPO Chevelles were built for 1969, all equipped with the L72 427 V8 rated at 425bhp. Today, genuine COPO Chevelles command premium prices in the classic car market.

The Colucci's COPO tribute was featured in a 2008 issue of Chevelle World magazine.
