Happy 100th birthday, Chevrolet!

Today — Nov. 3, 2011 — is Chevrolet's 100th birthday. 100 years ago today, famed race car driver Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant founded the Chevrolet Motor Company. From the 1912 Classic Six to today's Camaro SS, Chevrolet has become an American and automotive icon, building cars and trucks that don't just take us from place to place, but become part of our lives.

1955 Chevrolet Bel Air

Print editions of Automobile, AutoWeek and Hemmings Classic Car are highlighting Chevrolet's centennial, and the online edition of the New York Times' Wheels section has several Chevrolet centennial features, including a number of articles, slide shows and videos, including vintage Chevrolet commercials.

The section also includes a behind-the-wheel review of the 1955 Bel Air, probably the most significant Chevrolet in history — the car that transformed Chevrolet with its style and performance. The small-block V8 introduced in 1955 was, as Automobile put it, "an engineering home run, so versatile that its basic design continues to this day."

Read, enjoy, and take your classic Chevy out for a spin to celebrate.
