Old Blue — Ron Palmer's 1966 C10 Custom

Ron's story: he restored Old Blue himself in his garage, which his wife renamed Palmers Hot Rod Garage. He built a 388 stroker, full-roller motor with Edelbrock aluminum RPM heads, big 510 lift comp cam, Edelbrock RPM air gap intake, Holley 670 Street Avenger carb and a 700R4 trans turning 3:73 in the original 8.875 GM 12 bolt. Ron added CPP four wheel disc brakes with 275 65 15 tires on the front and 295 50 16 on the back. He also installed a Vintage Air A/C custom-fitted into the dash and converted the heater control to work the A/C.

Old Blue has placed first in most shows he’s taken it to, everyone loves the paint Robins Egg Blue and a cream white; it gets lots of comments.

Ron did the engine build in three months last winter. When he got it finished, he pulled it out of the garage and blew the head off of a piston within the first two hours. Too much compression and not enough octane. It made 175 psi without the rings being seated. So he pulled the engine out the next morning bored it bigger with new 8:1 Dish 383 hyper technic cromoly skirted pistons. Put it back in the truck and had it ready to drive on Easter Sunday. He did a burnout down the street in front of the church and the preacher; it was a beautiful thing.

The 388 has been hard on the 700R4 trany; it is on number four right now. Finally, he tried the Monster in a box, good for 700 HP. It hasn't broken yet, fingers crossed.

Lots of blood, sweat and tears in this old truck but the response has been worth every single ounce.
